The Foraging Pine Marten

The Foraging Pine Marten

Having clambered through a hazel tree this Pine Marten forages, finally setting its eyes on a nest high up in the tree. Jumping and swinging through the branches it creeps towards the nest. Though the branches become thinner and thinner making his position quickly more precarious. The yellowing branches of the hazel start to bend and swing with his weight, it becomes unclear whether or not he’ll make it or if its worth the risk.

A number of techniques and mediums were used in the creation of this piece. The background is fabric painted and embroidered, the nest, pine marten and branches were achieved through quilting, applique, painting, cording and embroidery. These techniques create the different textures from the soft fur of the pine marten to the dried leaves in the nest. Unfortunately, the three-dimensional relief doesn't show particularly well in the photos, so please take a look at the depth of the piece to get an idea of the overall effect.
